About

A one day BarCamp at City University London on Saturday 9 July in Central London for anyone involved or interested in user experience design, interaction design, information architecture or usability.

For anyone unfamiliar with the BarCamp model, it’s a grass-roots ‘unconference’ born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. All attendees give a talk, demo or some kind of session, and all are treated equally. No headliners, no product pitches, just a friendly (if intense) event focused on sharing and socialising as well as learning new stuff.

Paraphasing The Rules Of Barcamp:

  • You do talk about BarCamp.
  • You do blog about BarCamp.
  • No pre-scheduled presentations, no tourists.
  • Presentations will go on as long as they have to or until they run into another presentation slot.
  • If this is your first time at BarCamp, you HAVE to present. (Actually, this applies whether it’s your first or tenth BarCamp. All attendees present. It’s part of the fun.)

Tickets will be available in due time. Follow us on twitter for updates and news.

Speaking at UX camp

UXCampLondon 2011 is made up of various sessions happening simultaneously throughout the day. Each session slot takes up 30 minutes, but do plan your session to consider setup time, and for attendees to move between rooms. Each attendee is obliged to present at UX camp, but the format is very loose and you can pretty much do anything for a barcamp session.

It can be a presentation, an activity, a game, a discussion, a panel, a sketch… anything, really. Anything where a group of people can come and “do things” – listen, play, collaborate, learn, etc. It can be about anything, really. There also isn’t an emphasis on specific tracks, like “agile”, “human factors”, “usability” – sessions very loosely formed.

One an attendee has decided what he or she wants to talk about, it goes onto the grid. The grid is basically a snapshot of all the sessions taking place in the day, across the 8 rooms. If you’re looking for more advice and tips about presenting at a barcamp, here’s a useful article here about presenting at barcamps.

Bring along your laptop (and a VGA adapter if you have a Mac). Each room has a projector or a big TV you can use for your presentation.
